Timing Toastmasters speeches on a Mac

If you are the timer at a Toastmasters meeting, you have one job and everyone notices when it goes wrong. A visible countdown on your Mac makes the role simple.

Type the speech window

A standard prepared speech runs five to seven minutes. Type “7 min” and press Return when the speaker begins. For Table Topics, type “2 min”. For evaluations, “3 min”. Switching between them is one line of typing between speakers.

Watch the countdown, give your signals

Keep the timer pinned above your notes or sized large on your screen. Glance at the countdown and raise your cards at the format’s marks. The math of “when does the yellow card go up” is easier when the remaining time is a number in front of you.

Measure overtime exactly

Turn on count up after zero. When a speaker passes their window, the timer counts up, and your timer’s report has exact numbers: “Sarah finished 42 seconds over.” Precise, fair, and no stopwatch fumbling.
