How to set a timer on Mac: four ways

You need a countdown running while you do something else: cook, focus, present, wrap up a meeting. The Mac gives you more than one way to set it. Here are four, from the one already on your machine to the one you can keep in view all day.

Use the Clock app

macOS ships with a Clock app that includes timers.

  1. Open Clock and click Timers at the top of the window.
  2. Set the duration and click Start.
  3. A notification and sound fire when time is up.

It works, with one blind spot: the countdown lives in a normal window. Switch to your recipe, your slides, or your editor, and the time remaining is buried with it.

Ask Siri

Say “set a timer for 12 minutes” and Siri starts one, no window needed. This is the fastest way to set a timer with your hands full. It is also the least visible: you get the alarm at the end, not a countdown you can glance at along the way.

Use a free web timer

A browser timer needs no install at all. Type your time and press Return.

The tab has the same catch as the Clock window — your work covers it — so it fits best on a second display or a spare machine.

Keep the countdown visible while you work

If the whole point is knowing how much time is left, the timer has to stay on screen. That is the job Super Easy Timer is built for.

  1. Download Super Easy Timer free from the Mac App Store.
  2. Type what you mean: “12 min”, “5pm”, or “pomodoro”. Press Return.
  3. Keep it in view your way: pin it always on top of every window, tuck the countdown into the menu bar next to the clock, or take it full screen for a room.

Need more time while it runs? Type “Add 5 min” and the countdown adjusts without restarting.

Which one to pick

Clock app: a one-off timer where the alarm is all you need. Siri: hands are full, and the end sound is enough. Web timer: a borrowed machine or a second display. Super Easy Timer: the countdown stays visible while you work — even over full screen apps.
